H.E.L.P. apheresis in Long Covid
Hundreds of millions of people around the world were suffering from Covid-19. More and more of these people suffer from various late effects (Long or Post Covid Syndrome), estimates assume 10-15% of all patients. It is estimated that millions of people in the USA are affected by Long or Post Covid Syndrome. For many, this progresses into ME/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome). The symptoms include exhaustion, constant tiredness (chronic fatigue syndrome), chronic headaches, severe concentration disorders, dyspnea, tachycardia and loss of smell.
Overall, the pathogenesis of these diseases is not yet fully understood. There is currently no therapy that can be proven to be recommended without restrictions to every ME/CFS or post-Covid patient. These are usually individualized therapies, which then lead to improvements. The therapies, like the symptoms of the patients, are very individual. In addition to general supportive measures such as individualized physiotherapy, psychosomatic support, rehabilitation, and possibly off-label use of certain medications such as low-dose naltrexone, H.E.L.P apheresis and immunoadsorption can be used as part of an individual healing attempt, especially in severely affected patients.
H.E.L.P. apheresis has been available and established for over 30 years and is primarily used for patients with severe lipid metabolism disorders that are otherwise untreatable (e.g. hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipoproteinemia with cardiovascular complications).
As part of the treatment e.g. LDL, VLDL, Lp(a), inflammatory mediators, fibrinogen, pro-inflammatory adhesion molecules and other cytokines are removed. By removing these substances, including various inflammatory mediators, microcirculation and oxygen exchange in the organs are improved.
H.E.L.P. apheresis is generally very well tolerated and has few side effects. It is also compatible with anticoagulants and most medications.
The majority of patients get along well with the treatment and often notice significant improvement of symptoms right after the first session.
Initial data shows that H.E.L.P. apheresis both improves symptoms of Long and Post Covid Syndrome and can initiate or directly lead to recovery. In particular, the improvement of the microcirculation and the anti-inflammatory effects seem to play a decisive role.
The goal of our center apart from healing and improving quality of life, is to generate public acceptance and attention for Long and Post Covid Syndrome. For this purpose, our doctors are in close contact with other physicians (for example Dr. Beate Jaeger (Bad Aibling, vormals Muelheim an der Ruhr) and other centers that offer H.E.L.P. apheresis, as well as with Long and Post Covid special outpatient clinics and university hospitals.
